Barrio MX Travels To Alajuela Province To Play AD Carmelita In Second Leg of Apertura Promotion Playoff Quarterfinals at 12 p.m. CT on Sunday
November 20, 2021 – San José, CR – Barrio México can take a step toward its goal this weekend.
Barrio México travels to play AD Carmelita at 12 p.m. CT on Sunday, November 21 at Estadio Rafael Bolaños (XQW4+99V, Alajuela Province, San Antonio, Costa Rica) in the second leg of a Liga Motorola Apertura quarterfinal playoff match.
Barrio México entered the Liga Motorola promotion playoffs as the No. 3 team in Group A. The winner on Sunday advances to the Group ‘A’ Final.
Head Coach Gilberto ‘El Tuma’ Martinez said, “It’s going to be a very, very difficult game even though we have a three-goal advantage in the aggregate. Carmelita is a team that is going to give their all, starting with pressing us from the beginning of the game. As a coach and as a team we are at peace because we have worked hard and done everything right (and) with God’s help we will come out with a victory.”
Barrio México (8-6-3 W-D-L) topped Carmelita 3-0 in the first leg on Sunday, Nov. 14, with goals from DiJohn Arias, Jeffrey Montenegro and Marvin Chinchilla. The club now is unbeaten over its last seven matches overall, and has four consecutive wins over Carmelita dating to 2019.
Barrio MX goalkeeper Brian Morales said, “We had a great victory last week made more valuable now with three goals in our favor. This week we have worked on little details that will help us. Carmelita at home are tough, but even with that we should come back with a favorable result because we have matured greatly as a team and grown strong at handling tough games. We have to aggressive but not cocky with our 3-0 lead. We have to win.”
Gilberto ‘El Tuma’ Martinez is Head Coach of Barrio Mexico. Martinez made 61 appearances with the Costa Rica National Team from 2001-11 during a professional career that included 68 appearances for Saprissa from 1999-’02 and stops with Bresia and Roma in Italy’s Serie A.
Carlos ‘El Zorro’ Hernandez serves as Assistant Coach. Hernandez made 40 appearance with Costa Rica from 2004-’14 during a pro career that included seven years in Australia’s A-League from ’07-’14
Deybis Jimenez and Verny Scott lead Barrio Mexico with four goals each. Jonathan Hansen has three goals and three assists. Goalkeeper Brian Morales leads a defense that has allowed just 13 goals through 17 matches.
This is the second consecutive season that Barrio México has qualified for the Liga Motorola playoffs.
Barrio México is a Costa Rican professional football club based in San José, CR. Founded in 1948, the club is looking to return to Liga de Futbol de Primera Division (Liga FPD) for the first time since 2014.
Barrio México is a charter member of Liga Movistar and competes in the Liga de Ascenso Segunda Division. The club also manages a full youth development program.
In addition, Barrio México can participate in the qualifying rounds for the CONCACAF Champions League through its affiliation and membership with Liga Motorola, the Costa Rican Football Federation (FEDEFUT) and CONCACAF.
